Why are laws needed?

A
  • Control social relations and behaviour through a code of acceptable behaviour
  • Protect society e.g., Crimes Act 1958 (Vic)
  • Protect individuals and their rights e.g., Civil law
  • Reflect community values e.g., Tobacco Plain Packaging Act 2011 (Cth)
  • Facilitate social change e.g., same-sex marriage
  • Provide the institutions and procedures to settle disputes e.g., VCAT, County Court
