In the second half of the 19th c. debates began about the “Music of the Future” of Wagner, and the more Conservative style of Brahms. Wagner represented the Gesamtkunstwerk, and Brahms the Absolute music, using traditional forms and genres. This debate quickly became polarized into 2 sides or camps. It was the followers of the 2 composers more than the composers themselves that fueled this.
