Quiz Flashcards
(12 cards)
any swelling that is caused by inflammation, but now generally reserved for describing new growth
Tumor
described as new growth
Neoplasia/Neoplasm
refers to a malignant tumor
cancer
not referred to as cancer, contain recognizable tissue structure and do not invade beyond their capsule, nor do they spread.
Benign
lack capsule, therefore grow to invade nearby structures; cancer
Malignant
cancer that develops incrementally and accumulate specific genetic lesions
Cancer in situ
○ Arise from or form ductal or glandular structures
Ex: breast glandular tissue is a mammary adenocarcinoma
Adenocarcinoma
Cancers that arise from lymphatic tissue
Lymphoma
Cancers arising from mesenchymal tissue
Includes connective tissue, muscle and bone
Sarcoma
Cancer of blood forming cells
Leukemia
Benign Tumours Characteristics
○ Grow slowly
○ Have a well-defined capsule
○ Are not invasive
○ Are well differentiated; look like tissue from which they arise
○ Have a low mitotic index; dividing cells are rare
○ Do not metastasize
Malignant Tumours Characteristics
○ Grow rapidly
○ Are not encapsulated
○ Invade local structures and tissues
○ Are poorly differentiated; may not be able to determine tissue of origin
○ Have a high mitotic index; many dividing cells
○ Can spread distantly, often through blood vessels and lymphatics
