Quiz For Life Process Terms Flashcards
(10 cards)
Synthesis
Producing (making) larger (more complex) molecules (polymers) from smaller molecules (monomers) (building blocks)
Nutrition
Different types of nutrition: Autotrophic & Heterotrophic
Autotrophic: Able to synthesize organic nutrients from simple inorganic raw materials, producers, don’t need to “eat”
Heterotrophic: Must ingest/absorb preformed organic nutrients, consumers, eat (ingest)
Nutrition: the taking in of raw materials(ingestion), breaking them down into a usable form (digestion), and removal of undigested food (egestion). (Non-metabolic waste)
Respiration
occurs in all organisms
Is the release of (production of) usable chemical energy (ATP) from the breakdown of organic molecules usually sugar
The release of energy from food
Aerobic respiration: requires oxygen
Anaerobic respiration=fermentation: does not require oxygen
Transport
Is the absorption and circulation of necessary molecules into, within, and out of an organism or cell
Excretion
Removal of metabolic wastes (produced from cellular processes) ; urine, sweat, exhaling
The removal of harmful cellular waste or metabolic waste (same thing)
Growth
Is the increase in either cell size or cell number of an organism
Multicellular organisms grow by increasing The number of cells
Unicellular organisms grow by increasing cell size
Reproduction
This is the only life process that is not necessary for the survival of the individual
Asexual and sexual
The production of new individuals
Regulation
Is coordination and control of all life functions to maintain homeostasis. Involves nervous system and endocrine system (hormones)
Homeostasis
Is the stable internal environment that living things must maintain
Also called dynamic equilibrium: an allowable range of variation in our bodies
Metabolism
Total of all life activities
