What is Assimilation?
the loss of the minority group’s cultural identity as ithe people in that group become absorbed into the dominant culture, while there is minimal to no impact on the majority group’s cultural identity
What is an example of Assimilation?
attempted to integrate the Aboriginal population by Europeanizing them

oversimplified ideas about groups of people

actions towards groups of people
What is white privilege? Example?
Refers to the fact that dominant groups often accept their experience as the normative (and hence, superior) experience. The opposite is seen as unnormal. Example: College scandal ex of white privilege, becoming more visible
What is a settler society?
A society historically based on colonization through foreign settlement and displacement of Aboriginal inhabitants
What is segregation?
The physical separation of two groups, particularly in residence, but also in workplace and social functions.
What is a minority group?
Any group of people who are singled out from others for differential and unequal treatment.

groups that are subordinate, or lacking power in society regardless of skin colour or country of origin. The elderly could be consdered on.

What is institutional racialization? Example?
The residential school system was part of a system of institutional racism because it was established on the basis of a distinction between the educational needs of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. they were separated from their families. and Canadian immigration policies that imposed “head taxes” on Chinese immigrants
What is racialization?
The social process by which certain social groups are marked for unequal treatment based on perceived physiological differences.
What is ethnicity?
ethnicity is a term that describes shared culture
What is white solipsism?
Racism is only understood as real when determined real by white people.
Demands for proof of racism. Can only understand their way of living.
Thinking about race outside of the context of privilege.
What is racial oppression?
It’s expressed as: prejudice, discrimination, institutionalized racism. You cannot challenge oppression without challenging white privilege.
Whois W.E.B Du Bois?
Used sociology to make his argument that it is not innate and biological but because of social structure. First black person in America to get a PH.D and it was in sociology.

black community born in early 1800’s
