Raman Sped Flashcards

1
Q

What happens in Raman spec

A

Light from an incident laser source is inelastically scattered and shows up as a shift in frequency.
The energy associated with this shift of frewucny is that of a molecular vibration.

Q

What is elastic scattering

A

An amount of energy hits a sample and Bounces off. There is no interaction byeeeen matter and photon.

Q

What is a inleasttic scattering

A

Energy hits sample and sample uses soem fo the energy to do a molecular vibration , the energy associated with it changes . The wavelength therefore changes as some of the energy has been used to set the molecule into vibstyion mode.

Q

Dif fence between ir and Raman

A

Light hitting sample in Raman is much higher In energy and on,y some of the energy is absorbed

Q

Advantages of Raman over ir

A

Minimal sample prep

Very general - Can be applied on a lot of materials

Rich in information

Aqueous samples can be easily used.

Q

Disadvantages of Raman over ir

A

Effect is weak - v sensitive detectors needed - expensive.

Interference from fluorescence - can swamp Raman signal
