Random Science Stuff Flashcards
Science
All cells have a cell membrane to protect them from the environment.
True
Organisms can be single-celled or multi-celled.
True
All cells have a nucleus inside them.
False
As one increases the magnification to see the sample under a microscope, the field of view gets larger.
False
What are the building blocks of all living things?
Cells
What are characteristics/ traits of single-celled organisms?
growth, reproduction, metabolism, and response to stimuli
What effects do single-celled organisms have on people and food?
Bacteria can spoil food, keep you healthy, and get you sick
Where do you find single-celled organisms?
Inside your body, pond water, yogurt, soil
What functions do cells carry out?
growth, reproduction, metabolism (use energy), and response to stimuli
Function of digestive system
Breakdown food into molecules
Connection to the circulatory system
The molecules get absorbed by the villi and sent throughout the body by the bloodstream.
How do cells get food?
Diffusion
Mechanical digestion
Breaking down food by chewing, grinding, and churning
Chemical digestion
Food is broken down through acids, bile, and enzymes
Define osmosis
Water molecules moving from a higher concentration to a lower concentration
Why does the body need oxygen?
In cells, there is a chemical reaction involving glucose and oxygen that releases energy
Yeast experiment
Yeast ate the sugar and was able to reproduce and release a gas as waste - chemical reaction
What is yeast?
A single-celled fungi
Egg white experiment
Pepsin + acid = breakdown of egg protein - chemical reaction
Cracker lab
Enzymes in saliva breaks down starches into glucose in the mouth - chemical reaction
Purpose of breathing
Bringing oxygen to cells to unlock energy
How does oxygen move through the body?
Oxygen moves through the lungs and out into the bloodstream
What happens within the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive system when we work out?
The heart pumps faster in order to send more oxygen and glucose to our cells for more energy!
When does your body need more or less energy?
More – exercise, walking, shopping
Less – sleeping, lying on the couch
