Edith Humphrey
I find Edith Humphrey particularly inspiring because she overcame many obstacles to become and accomplished chemist, for instance her background and gender which she was often discriminated against. She consistently stood up for what she believed in, becoming the first British woman to achieve a doctorate in chemistry, becoming the first female assistant to Werner and achieving a fellowship which she campaigned for in the Chemical Society. She also made significant progress in optical isomerism and optical activity which intrigues me greatly, leading to further research in the area. This is shown by how she was the first scientist to synthesise optically active isomers.
Institution and departmental strengths
Collegial system creates a sense of unity between pupils, providing socialising schemes as well as housing and resources
Tutorial system of the University would be important to me to allow me to easily and frequently ask for help and clarification
Aims and values of the institution and department
Provide lots of machines, making them accessible and increasing likelihood of using them
Lots of textbooks available to save money
Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry
Structure and type of course
Continually learning physical, organic and inorganic resulting in a wide knowledge base and allowing people to specialise later which can be done in the fourth year final project
Testing on all parts of chemistry throughout makes it easier to apply knowledge and makes links between areas of chemistry
Biological chemistry which interests me
Supplementary courses really interest me such as the History and Philosophy of Chemistry
Key areas of research
Theoretical research which has made many key discoveries, shown by the publications in the newspapers such as the structure and function of an antibiotic synthesis enzyme
Biological chemistry such as the 3D printing of tissue-like materials
Types of careers that students progress on to
Further degrees, chemical industries
95% of people employed after 6 months
Lots of opportunities as chemistry is a well respected degree that offers lots of transferable skills making it appealing to employers
Opportunity for skills development
Can do the fourth year abroad or in other universities
Many students do short work placements in their holidays to gain valuable experience with CareerConnect
