(9 cards)
What is Hemoglobin?
Hemoglobin is a protein pigment found in red blood cells (RBC).
What is the structure of Hemoglobin?
Hemoglobin contains heme, which includes iron (Fe+2), and is composed of polypeptide chains.
What is Oxyhemoglobin?
Oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) is formed when hemoglobin binds with oxygen (O2).
What is Carbaminohemoglobin?
Carbaminohemoglobin (HbCO2) is formed when hemoglobin binds with carbon dioxide (CO2).
What is the normal amount of hemoglobin in blood?
The normal range of hemoglobin in blood is 12-16 gm/dL.
What is the lifespan of red blood cells?
The lifespan of red blood cells is approximately 120 days.
Where do RBCs go to die?
After 120 days, RBCs are typically sent to the spleen for destruction.
What role do splenic macrophages play?
Splenic macrophages destroy aged RBCs after their lifespan of 120 days.
What is the function of Kuffer cells?
Kuffer cells in the liver are macrophages that also help in the destruction of aged RBCs.
