Re-sit Blood Components Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is blood made up of?
55% plasma
45% erythrocytes
1% leukocytes
1% platelets
What’s the structure of red blood cells?
They are concave discs that don’t have a nucleus and carry 02 and some CO2.
What is the red blood cells main job?
To carry O2 from the lungs to the rest of the body and transport CO2 back to the lungs for exhalation.
What’s the role of plasma?
Transports nutrients, hormones and waste
Regulates body temp and pH
Support blood pressure and volume
Has a role in immunity and clotting
How do red blood cells form?
Starts in bone marrow
Differentiates into pro erythroblast
Synthesises haemoglobin and nucleus expelled= reticulocyte
Reticulocyte matures after leaving bone marrow= erythrocyte
Process is stimulated by low O2 levels
