Reaction of acids (C9) Flashcards
What are acids?
Compounds that, when dissolved in water, release H+ ions
What are the 3 main acids?
Sulfuric acid(H2SO4), nitric acid(HNO3), and hydrochloric acid(HCl)
What are Alkalis?
Compounds that, when dissolved in water, release OH- ions
What type of scale is the PH scale and what is the definition of it?
It is a logarithmic scale, which means it is that an increase or decrease of 1 indicates there is 10x less ore more H+ ions in the solution
Name some strong acids and why they are strong
Sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid. They are strong because they completely ionise
Name some weak acids and what makes them weak
Ethanoic acid, citric acid, and carbonic acid. They are weak because they are only partially ionised
What ions form in a solution of HCl?
H+ and Cl-
What ions form in a solution of H2SO4?
2H+ and SO4(2-)
What ions form in a solution of NHO3
H+ and NO3(-)
what type of salt is formed from HCl?
Metal chloride
what type of salt is formed from H2SO4?
Metal sulfate
what type of salt is formed from HNO3?
metal nitrate
