2
Q

How does sodium react with cold water?

A

the reaction of sodium with water is vigorous, sodium floats on the surface of the water and fizzes rapidly melting because of the heat energy released from the reaction.

Q

what are the products of the reaction between magnesium and water? (1)

A

The resulting solution is less alkaline that in the case of sodium because magnesium hydroxide is only sparingly soluble.

Q

how does phosphorus react with oxygen? (1)

A

Red phosphorus must be heated before it will react with oxygen.
white phosphorus ignites in air and the white smoke of phosphorus pentoxide is given off.
