REACTIONS OF PERIOD 3 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the only two elements in period 3 that react with cold water? (2)
Magnesium and sodium
How does sodium react with cold water?
the reaction of sodium with water is vigorous, sodium floats on the surface of the water and fizzes rapidly melting because of the heat energy released from the reaction.
what are the products of the reaction between sodium and water? (1)
A strongly alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide is formed
how does magnesium react with cold water? (1)
the reaction with magnesium is very slow at room temperature, only a few bubbles of hydrogen are formed after a few days.
what are the products of the reaction between magnesium and water? (1)
The resulting solution is less alkaline that in the case of sodium because magnesium hydroxide is only sparingly soluble.
How does magnesium react with oxygen? (1)!
Burns with a bright white flame
what are the products when magnesium reacts with oxygen? (1)
a white powder, magnesium oxide.
how does aluminium react with oxygen? (1)
when aluminium powder is heated and lowered into a jar of oxygen, it burns brightly to give aluminium oxide
how does silicon react with oxygen? (1)
silicon will form an oxide if it is heated strongly in oxygen
how does phosphorus react with oxygen? (1)
Red phosphorus must be heated before it will react with oxygen.
white phosphorus ignites in air and the white smoke of phosphorus pentoxide is given off.
how does phosphorus react when there is a limited supply of oxygen? (1)
phosphorus trioxide is formed
how does sulphur react with oxygen? (1)
when sulphur power is heated a blue flame forms symbolising sulphur dioxide gas and a little sulphur trioxide also forms.
