1) the travelled in one large 6 horse ‘Berline’ 2) the departure was delayed because the weight of the carriage slowed them down. The troops waiting at Châllons left an hour before they arrived (2 hours late) so unprotected 3) Louis was recognised by an old soldier from a coin and members of the National Assembly escorted them back to Paris from Varennes

A temporary suspension (16th July 1791) then a vote for the kings abdication and start of talks of a revolution - 290 members of NA refused to vote on this because they had just set up the constitutional monarchy

6000 people arrived - cause tension. The assembly and Paris commune sent Lafayette and national guards. People got angry - threw rocks. Warning shots then National guards fired directly at the crowds. Probably 50 deaths
