What is emergent literacy?
Knowledge and skills that are resources to reading
What are examples of emergent literacy?
- Spaces between letters
- Direction
- Written words corresponding to spoke words
What is home literacy environment (Weigel at al, 2006)?
Parent child literacy = greater child print knowledge and reading interest
What did Froiland et al (2013) find?
Neighbourhood SE wellbeing = home literacy environment = child early literacy
What did Roberts et al (2005) find?
Home is the strongest and most consistent predictor of childs language and literacy skills
What are the 4 predictors of reading ability?
- Concepts of print
- Phonemic awareness
- Rhyme awareness
- Letter knowledge
What did Goodman (1965) find in relation to whole word theory?
Reading words in context showed 60-80% fewer errors that reading words in isolation
What did Nichlson (1991) suggest?
Reading in context is only relevant for poorer readers and may be a compensation effect
Why are some readers good decoders but poor comprehenders?
Role of metacognition (high for skilled comprehension)
What did Cain (1991) find?
Poor comprehenders were less likely to identify independent strategies when encountering a word they can’t read/dont understand
What is phonics screening check?
Test used to confirm if pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard

High competence beliefs in boys
What did Stipek & Gralinski (1991) find in relation to gender?
Higher expected performance in boys and greater attribution to lack of ability upon failure in girls

- 5 year olds = own gender bias
- 6 year olds = only boys show own gender bias
