Inferential

A

Reading between the lines; the unobvious meaning in the text/definitions of each individual word - the inferences we can make from the text.
Ex. Alex had a frown on his face, dragging his feet as he walked > plausible inference: bad day.

Thematic

A

The message woven through the text, oft about important topics like human nature, life or society; Deeper than the plot or summary and can answer questions of ‘What does it mean to be a family?’ or ‘What are we afraid of?’ Answers an underlying Universal Human Question.
Ex. Jekyll and Hyde suggests answer to ideas of good and evil in human nature.

Ideological

A

Refers to forms of thought and rhetoric that present the interests of a particular group as the interests of the majority, the nation or the whole community; Investigate embedded values, beliefs, biases and assumptions within a text, in some domain of discourse, or in social practices within a particular cultural context, and of the motivations and power relations underlying these.
Ex. The Crucible presents the extremist religious ideology of the Puritans.

Aesthetic

A

A reading that explores the work and oneself, readers are engaged in the experience of reading; focus is on the experience with a text - therefore, the focus on the readability, clarity and effectiveness of a text and the strategies used to develop the experience and achieve these things.
Ex. Reading Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China to grasp the extent of the turmoil and horrors of the Cultural Revolution and communism.
