Wade-Davis Bill & its veto
A bill proposed by the Radical Republican party which required states to end slavery, grant African American men the right to vote and call for half of a state’s voters to sign a loyalty oath before that state could be readmitted. The oath was different than Lincoln’s and required a person to swear they never supported the rebellion. This would have taken away thousands of Southerner’s right to vote, and Lincoln vetoed it because it was too harsh.
