Q

what are the 7 oxidation rules?

A
  1. uncombined elements = 0
  2. monatomic ion = charge (Na+ = +1)
  3. Groups = charge (Group 1 = +1, Group 7 = -1)
  4. Hydrogen = +1 but -1 in metal hydrides
  5. Oxygen = -2 but -1 in peroxides, +2 in F2O
  6. Totals =
sum of O state in neutral compounds = 0
sum of O state in ions = ion charge
  7. more electronegative element is given the negative O state
