Q
what is oxidation? 3 definitions
A
- addition of O2
- loss of hydrogen
- loss of electrons
2
Q
what is reduction? 3 definitions
A
- loss of oxygen
- addition of hydrogen
- gain of electrons
3
Q
what is an oxidising agent?
A
the atom that gets reduced as it causes the other atom to lose e-
oxidation state of the oxidising agent decreases
4
Q
what is the reducing agent?
A
the atom that gets oxidised as it causes the another atom to gain e-
oxidation state of reducing agent increases
5
Q
what are the 7 oxidation rules?
A
- uncombined elements = 0
- monatomic ion = charge (Na+ = +1)
- Groups = charge (Group 1 = +1, Group 7 = -1)
- Hydrogen = +1 but -1 in metal hydrides
- Oxygen = -2 but -1 in peroxides, +2 in F2O
- Totals =
sum of O state in neutral compounds = 0
sum of O state in ions = ion charge - more electronegative element is given the negative O state
