Q

What is Energy Availability

A

is the amount of energy available following the energy used for exercise for normal physiological functions per kg of fat free mass

Q

REDs

A

prolonged low energy availability often leads to REDs

often when you increase exercise and maintain or decrease food intake decreasing a resting metabolic rate through
- decrease caloric intake and decrease exercise energy expenditure
- low energy availability
- impacts hormones
- functional hypothalamic amenorrhea

Q

Symptoms of REDs

A
  • impaired menstrual cycle
  • impaired immune system
  • impaired bone density
  • reduced female hormones
17
Q

Symptoms of REDs in Males

A
  • reduced hormones levels
  • reduced protein synthesis response to training
  • impacts bone metabolism
18
Q

Energy Deficiency also causes

19
Q

Prevalence of REDS

A

NZ female survey

average age = 23.8
45% risk of LEA
awareness is increasing

20
Q

Screening: calculating energy availability

A

no accurate measure

LEAF Questionnaire is more commonly used, using a score of 8 or Higher indicating a risk of LEA

21
Q

Reasons for LEA/REDs

A
  • eating disorders and disordered eatings
  • intentional weight loss
  • under eating
22
Q

Energy Availability: Influences on Intake

A
  • athletes are influenced just as much if not more than the general population with current diet trends
  • athletes have more access to nutrition to information
23
Q

Orthorexia

A

an obsession with healthy eating

  • often caused by confusion and not working alongside a nutritionist
  • if nutrition plan has same energy per day is not good as you change trainings per day
24
Q

Body Image Correlation

A

body image and low energy availability has a correlation

25
Body Composition and Measurement
shouldn't be used in sport as doesn't measure performance
26
Why measure body composition
- identify physical characteristics - monitors growth, training - determines optimal BM for weight category sports - relationship between health and performance
27
Athletes Diets Questions
diet - beliefd, restrictions training - how over, when, loads, recovery other - injury, growth, weight, period, pressures
28
Advice for Clients who may be at risk for REDS
- fuel around trainings - if you are hungry = eat - regular eating throughout the day - take at least one rest day per week
29
Recovery
energy status - only for days or weeks period = months to gain back bone mass = years or never - this is the most concerning as if you don't have a high BM at your beak you have bad impacts later in life
30
% of exercising females of risk of REDS
