REDS Flashcards
(31 cards)
REDS =
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport
Te Whare Tapa Wha
their is both a social, physical, spiritual and mental component to eating
What is an Eating Disorder
- clinically diagnosed conditions but the AMP DSM-V 2013
- they are an illness
- severe disturbances to eating, food and their body weight and their behaviours and emotions towards them
- many different types of eating disorders
Continuum of Eating Patterns
healthy eating to disordered eating to eating disorders with a few things in between
Are Eating Disorder Rates are
increasing
covid had a bad impact
Common Age Group if Eating Disorders
20-24yrs of age is most common and 5-14 yrs is least common
Teams and Eating Disorders
Team sports are less to have eating disorders, but in toxic, and some sport environments is can be worst
rates 25-42%
team sports 12-17%
Eating Disorders Amongst Athletes
- varies by sport
- more common weight class and low BM adv sports
Common Comorbidities in Eating Disorders
when suffering from eating disorders you often also suffer from mental health conditions
- depression
- anxiety
- obsessive compulsive disporder
- substance use
Eating Disorder Treatment
clinical eating disorders should not be tackled by a dietitian/nutritionist alone
to be over come a multi- disciplinary team is required
what are the 3 athlete specific eating disorders
- Triad = Female Athlete Triad
- LEA = Lower Energy Availability
- Reds = Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports
What is Energy Availability
is the amount of energy available following the energy used for exercise for normal physiological functions per kg of fat free mass
the leftover energy after you intake and exercise, if none left over your body goes over into starvation mode
Lower Energy Availability
we need 45kcal/kg FFM/day to maintain an optimal energy availability
30 = energy deficiency , one week at this can impact a womens hormones and bone health
45 = weight gain
Female Athlete Triad
3 consequences after 5 days of
2. low energy
leading too
3. low oestrogen
leading too
1. low bone density
REDs
prolonged low energy availability often leads to REDs
often when you increase exercise and maintain or decrease food intake decreasing a resting metabolic rate through
- decrease caloric intake and decrease exercise energy expenditure
- low energy availability
- impacts hormones
- functional hypothalamic amenorrhea
Symptoms of REDs
- impaired menstrual cycle
- impaired immune system
- impaired bone density
- reduced female hormones
Symptoms of REDs in Males
- reduced hormones levels
- reduced protein synthesis response to training
- impacts bone metabolism
Energy Deficiency also causes
GI impacts
Prevalence of REDS
NZ female survey
average age = 23.8
45% risk of LEA
awareness is increasing
Screening: calculating energy availability
no accurate measure
LEAF Questionnaire is more commonly used, using a score of 8 or Higher indicating a risk of LEA
Reasons for LEA/REDs
- eating disorders and disordered eatings
- intentional weight loss
- under eating
Energy Availability: Influences on Intake
- athletes are influenced just as much if not more than the general population with current diet trends
- athletes have more access to nutrition to information
Orthorexia
an obsession with healthy eating
- often caused by confusion and not working alongside a nutritionist
- if nutrition plan has same energy per day is not good as you change trainings per day
Body Image Correlation
body image and low energy availability has a correlation
