Reflex Activity Flashcards
(40 cards)
What does a reflex tell an examiner?
A clue to where the damage may have occurred along the conduction pathway
Abdominial, cremasteric, plantar, anal reflex are
Superficial relfexes
Biceps, triceps, brachioradials, patellar, ankle jerk are
Stretch relfexes
Reflexes are
A type of control system to keep the body safe from potentially harmful changes internally and externally in environment (maintain homeostasis)
Reflexes occur over highly specific pathways
Reflex arcs
Stimulus is picked up or received here (site of stimulus action)
Receptor
Transmits afferent impulses to CNS
Sensory neuron
CNS
Integration center
Conducts efferent impulses to an effector
Motor neuron
Muscle fiber or gland that does something to respond motor commabd
Effector
4 categories of spinal reflexes
Stretch
Withdrawal
Cross extensor
Superficial cord reflexes
Degree of muscle length is conveyed by
Muscles spindles
Info on tension in tendons
Golgi tendon
Modified skeletal muscle fibers
Intrafusal muscle fibers
Typical skeletal muscle fibers
Extrafusal
Injury to lower spinal cord and lumbar plexus
Cremasteric reflex
Tests integrity of spinal cord and ventral rami
Abdominal reflex
To test sympathetic
Ciliosponal reflex
To test parasympathetic
Pupillary light reflex
Salivary reflex
Reflex that is genetic, not learned
Innate reflexes
Learned by experience reflexes
Acquired reflexes
Control the contraction of skeletal muscle fibers
Alpha motor neurons
Neurons that adjust the stretch sensitivity of the muscle spindle do that the spindle is active even when muscle shortens
Gamma motor neurons
When both sets of fibers causes tension on the muscle spindles to be maintained as the muscle shortens (sensitivity to stretch is maintained)
Alpha-Gamma Coactivation
