Why was there a rebellion that the Duke of Alba had to stop?
• The Netherlands (modern-day Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) were ruled by Spain under King Philip II.
• The Dutch people were mostly Protestant (especially Calvinist), but Spain was Catholic and tried to enforce Catholicism strictly.
• The Spanish government imposed heavy taxes and tried to crack down on Protestantism. This caused anger and resentment among the Dut
What caused the rebellion?
Religious tension:
• Spanish rulers persecuted Protestants.
• Protestants wanted religious freedom.

Philip II sent the Duke of Alba to the Netherlands in 1567 to crush the rebellion.
• Alba set up the Council of Troubles (nicknamed the “Blood Council”) to try and execute rebels and Protestants.
• His harsh actions increased resentment and prolonged the conflict.
