Evolutionary psychologists
Psychologists that believe the psychological process that people use to chose their partner comes from evolution
Natural selection
The process where characteristics that make an individual more likely to reproduce and pass on their genes become more prevalent in a population
Intra sexual selection
Takes places when males compete and the winner is rewarded with a the female
Inter sexual selection
Takes place when males compete for the attention of a female
Buss (1989) gender differences in males selection
Questionnaires were sent to 10000males and 37 different cultural females and asked the questions about relationships
Men valued teh reproductive capacity (youth etc )
Females valued variables with gaining resources (money etc)
Buss and Schmitt (1993) sexual strategies theroy
Men and women have various strategies for choosing partners depending on the situation
Weakness of the sexual strategies theory
There were more similarities between men and women and other factors like intelligence were more important
Evolutionary expat do not take into account socail determinants of behaviour
Most studies where done on animals so can not be generalised
Factors which affect attraction in romantic relationships
Physical attractiveness
Self disclosure - information about someone
Kerckhoff and Davis (1962) Filter theory 3 different stages
Socail demographic filter - field of available
Similarity in attitudes filter - field pf desirables
Complementary filter- in the longer term relationships will progress if partners are fuelling each others needs
Waltser et al 1996 computer dance study
Computer dance was advertised and 367 men and women were paired up random,y the study showed that people prefer act Rivne’s regardless of their own attractiveness
Taylor’s social penetration theroy (1973)
Intimacy and closeness develop in relationships through a gradual process of self disclosure
Joinson (2001) self disclosure in computer communication
Student where asked to discuss and abstract dilemma and was conducted in three different conditions one face to face one on a computer chat from and another on a chat room with a camera in the XPRIZE t they found that self disclosure was much higher on chat then the other to conditions
Public self awareness
This is being aware of how other see you
Private self awareness
This is looking inwards being aware of what’s going on inside your head
Gating
A process that limit is how much we self disclose
Gates limit us to self disclose . Gates can be stuff such as apprentice , shyness , socail skills
Why are virtual relationships stronger
The absence of gating
McKenna et al (2002) relationship formation on the internet
Surveys were sent randomly to people participating in of a special interest forum and they were asked if they shared more online of offline and sent a follow up survey two years later
People who shared stuff more openly online developed internet relationships more quickly and half had met in real life after two year ones who had started romantic relationships online 71% were still in relationships
Parasocial relationships
This is the relationship an audience forms with a celebrity
They are one sided with one person knowing lots and the other knowning nothing
McCutcheon three levels of parasocial relationships
Entertainment social- where the relationship with the celebrity exists as a source of fun
Intense personal - obsessive thought being to arise with the celebrity
Borderline pathological- obsessive thoughts begin to become fully fledged fantasies and behaviours
How does the attachment theory link to Parasocial relationship
Attachment theory suggests that children which didn’t form close attachments with their charge givers may later devolved insecure attachments as adults which explains why they are more likely to be attracted to celebrities as it is one sided and little opportunity for rejection
MCutcheon Absorption addiction model and the two stages
The model suggests that people form these relationships when they have a weak sense of identity
Their are two stages :
Absorption-an individual becomes absorbed in following a celebrity
Addiction - the individual becomes more and more obsessed and this can lead to extreme behaviour like stalking this usually happens because of poor mental health
Equity theory
Says people thrive to achieve fairness in their relationship
