Evolutionary explanation
RTS Buss
RTS - Buss - 10,000 ppts from 37 countries asked ppts their preferable mate - found that men wanted young, youthful women and women wanted men with resources (good finance) - increases validity
Evolutionary explanation
Clark - & Hatfield
RTS- Clark & Hatfield - got confederate to ask random people on the street “will you have sex with me?” - 75% of men said yes, 0% of women said yes - shows women are choosey and men have a different strategy to ensure reproductive success - increase validity
Evoluntionary explanation
Temp
Temporal validity- not explain modern relationships - homosexuality & women who have abortions - states relationships are due to reproduction - limits explanation - cannot be sole explanation due to indiviudal differences
Self disclosure
Sprecher & Hendrick
RTS - Sprecher & Hendrick -studied heterosexual dating couples - found strong correlation between relationship satisfaction & self disclosure - found that when both believed they self-disclosed led to satisfaction - increase validity
Self disclosure
Cor
Correlational cannot establish cause & effect of self-disclosure & levels of attraction - e.g. more satisfaction = more disclosure or could be other variables (physical attractiveness) - limiting support + internal validity
Self disclosure
CR
Cultural relativism - self-disclosure leads to attraction - more relevant in western relationships - difficult to generalise as in US women and men disclose more sexual thoughts and feelings than men and women in China - level of satisfaction is no different in China to US - lowering external validity
Physical attractiveness
Cunningham et al
Cunningham found that there was similarities of attraction in different countries - big eyes, small nose was considered attractive in hispanic and asian males - seen as genetic fitness - universality in physical attractiveness - increasing validity
Matching hypothesis
Taylor et al
Taylor - used dating logs to see who people wanted to talk to - found ppl sought partners who were more physically atractive than them - not key factor
Counter - choosing indiviudals to date are different from actually dating them - many studies have found a correlation on matched attractiveness of relationship - supports matching hypothesis
Matching hypothesis
Comp
Computer dance - ppts chose to pick people from a computer to dance with - found ppl picked ppl with similar levels of attractiveness - increases validity of MH.
