What are the Four Marks of the Church?
One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic
What does ‘One’ signify in the Four Marks of the Church?
There is only one Catholic Church.
What does ‘Holy’ signify in the Four Marks of the Church?
The leader of the Church is Jesus. All baptised members share in this holiness.
What does ‘Catholic’ mean?
The word ‘Catholic’ means universal. Wherever Jesus is, so too is the Catholic Church.
What does ‘Apostolic’ signify in the Four Marks of the Church?
The Church is apostolic because it was built on the apostles and continues their mission and gifts.
What was the Protestant Reformation?
A religious reform movement in Europe during the 1500s.
Who began the Protestant Reformation?
Martin Luther challenged the Church’s authority.
What was the result of the Protestant Reformation?
The creation of a new Christian branch: Protestantism.
What is the Magisterium?
The official teaching authority of the Catholic Church.
What authority does the Magisterium hold?
It is the authority Christ gave to the Church to interpret His teachings.
The magisterium interprets Scripture and tradition to guide Church teachings.
What was the Council of Trent?
An ecumenical council called in response to the Reformation.
What was the outcome of the Council of Trent?
Addressed corruption in the Church, improved priest training, and re-emphasised Church teachings.
What was the Second Vatican Council?
Called by Pope John XXIII and continued by Pope Paul VI.
Why is the Second Vatican Council significant?
It is the most significant council of the 20th century.
What were the purposes of the Second Vatican Council?
Modernize the Church, promote unity, and renew the Church’s role.
What is the New Law of Freedom?
The law Jesus gave, based on love, mercy, and inner transformation.
What does the New Law of Freedom do?
Frees people from sin and helps them live in harmony with God.
What is the Sinai Covenant?
A conditional agreement between God and the Israelites at Mount Sinai.
What was the purpose of the Sinai Covenant?
To form the Israelites into God’s chosen people who follow His law.
