What is peace?
absence of conflict and violence where everyone lives in harmony
What is a pacifist?
someone who has strongly held beliefs that war and physical violence are wrong
What happened to the pacifists in Britain who refused to fight in the world wars?
they went to prison and were prisoners of conscience
they suffered humiliation in prison and after they had been released
What are 3 reasons violence happens?
crime
terrorism
war
What is a protest?
when groups of people join together to campaign for a cause they support
What are 4 causes of war?
religion
self-defence
honour
greed
retaliation
What are the 5 conditions to start a Just War?
must be a valid reason for war
all other options must have been attempted to prevent war
must be started by proper authority
must have reasonable chance of success
any harm caused mustn’t be as bad as the harm it’s trying to prevent
What are the 2 conditions to fight a war Justly?
discriminate between combatants and civilians
the military advantage gained by an attack must outweigh any harm to civilians
What is holy war?
a war where people believe that God is ‘on their side’ and are mentioned in both the old testament and the Qur’an
What do christians believe about conflict?
people should be peaceful as many of Jesus’s teachings show that peace is the ultimate goal for humans

What did Dr Martin Luther King do?
baptist minister who dedicated his life to trying to change the way black people were treated in USA.
What did Thomas Merton do?
catholic monk and famous pacifist. IN 1960s, his writings influenced many in the civil rights movement for racial equality and he was against violence of the Vietnam War

What are muslim beliefs about war?
majority of muslims disagree with pacifism as war is sometimes justified in the Qur’an
some are against all war and violence as they believe pacifism is the best and is the key to Islam

Islam teaches people to protest against injustice but not in a violent way
