Form and structure

A

Monologue in the present tense to give flashbacks which is a symptom of PTSD. First four stanzas are in Iraq and the final 3 are in Iran. Enjambment makes it fast pacedto show the action and repetition conveys guilt and bitterness.

A

Metaphor for physical stain of trauma.

“His bloody life in my bloody hands.”

A

Bloody can be interpreted as an exclamation used to convey guilt.His hands are stained permenetly by his action.
This also alludes to Macbeth, his actions are irreversible and so is the moral outcome. This physical and psycologial guilt is a lifelong burden as he believes that he is responsible for the mans life and death and the wight of this will forever be carried by his identity.

A

Juxtaposition reflects an emotional clash in the readers mind showing the emotional burden he carries with himself.
Emphasised the doubt he feels highlighting the ambiguity of war. Creates internal conflict as the speaker could have made a mistake.
