Removable Pros Flashcards

1
Q

How do special trays improve impression accuracy?

A
  1. They cover all areas needed for denture
  2. Impression material is not too thick and uniform in thickness which reduces distortion

Q

When constructing a denture, when would you make the denture in RCP/CR?

A

When there is not a lot of occluding posterior teeth getting a reproducible ICP is difficult therefore you construct the dentures in a retruded jaw position (RCP/CR)

Q

Define path of insertion

A

Path followed by the denture from its initial contact until it is finally seated

Q

What are the different kennedy classifications of dentures design?

A

Class I - Bilateral free ended partially edentulous
Class II - Unilateral free ended partially edentulous
Class III - Unilateral bounded partially edentulous
Class IV - Bilateral bounded anterior partially edentulous

(A mod is when there is an additional bounded saddle)

Q

In what order should each component of denture design be carried out?

A
  1. Draw saddles
  2. Draw guide planes
  3. Draw supports (rest seats)
  4. Draw clasps (for retention)
  5. Draw recirpocation
  6. Draw major connector

6
Q

What is an occlusally approaching clasp?

A

A clasp where the retentive arm approaches tooth undercut from occlusal direction

Terminal third of clasp below survey line

Q

At what stage do you choose the shade and shape of denture teeth?

A

Prior to tooth try-in in pink wax so usually at jaw registration for master casts stage

Q

What are the 5 functions of a rest seat?

A
  1. Transmit occlusal forces to the teeth along their long axes (axial loading)
  2. Maintain correct occlusal relationship of denture base to abutment teeth
  3. Prevent trauma to gingival margins
  4. Provide some horizontal stability
  5. Prevent ingress of food between abutment teeth and denture base

Q

When constructing a denture, when would you make the denture in ICP?

A

When a patient has multiple teeth remaining you use their natural teeth as a guide for tooth position

A REPRODUCIBLE ICP

i.e. Replacing UR1 UL1 UL2

Q

During denture design/construction when would you use reciprocation and why is it needed?

A

Use reciprocation opposing a clasp

Necessary to stop tooth movement

Red = Clasp / Green = Reciprocation

16
Q

Give 3 advantages and 1 disadvantage of cobalt chrome compared to acrylic dentures

A

Advantages:
Cobalt chrome is stronger and less bulky than acrylic
Cobalt chrome can have a more hygenic design
Cobalt chrome is easier to clean

Disadvantage:
Cobalt chrome is harder to modify

17
Q

What is the role of major connectors?

A

Joins saddles

18
Q

What is the function of a face bow?

A

Records the 3 dimensional relationship between the upper occlusal plane and the terminal hinge axis of the patient

Terminal hinge axis (imaginary plane between condyles)
19
Q

Define guide plane

A

2 or more parallel (axial) tooth surfaces on abutment teeth which are used to restrict the path of insertion of a denture

20
Q

What would you expect of a patient before you begin denture construction?

A

Free of periodontal disease
Plaque score below 20%
Teeth with poor prognosis extracted (allow for healing)
Restore dentition before master impressions

21
Q

What are the options you can give a patient when planning an extraction around a denture construction?

A
  1. Extract tooth, allow healing and make a new denture
  2. Make an immediate denture at XLA appointment
  3. Add tooth (that replaces extracted) to existing denture either immediately or 2/3 days after extraction
  4. Make a new partial denture with soon to be extracted tooth still there, then once patient is happy and used to denture, extract the tooth and add new tooth to denture.
22
Q

What are the 9 stages of denture construction?

For cobalt chrome

A
  1. Before you start ensure a good foundation for denture (E.g. free of perio)
  2. Take Primary impressions
  3. Take Master impressions
  4. Make and fit cobalt chrome framework
  5. Jaw registration for master casts
  6. Tooth try-in in pink wask
  7. Flask pack and finish
  8. Denture fit
  9. Denture review
