Replication Flashcards
(15 cards)
What needs to happen for a study to add to existing knowledge?
The results have to replicable
When is a study replicable?
When you get similar data results with new participants from the same study
What are the 3 types of replication studies?
- Direct replication
- Conceptual replication
- Replication and extension
Direct Replication
Same concepts and variables, with same operational definitions.
Conceptual Replication
Same concepts with different operational definitions
Replication and Extension
Same concepts and variables with new concepts and variables.
Theory
A statement or set of statements that describes general principles about how variables relate to one another.
Data
A set of observations representing the values of some variable, collected from one or more research studies.
Prediction
A way of stating the specific outcome in the data that the researcher expects to observe if the theory is accurate.
What do replication studies make replication?
An empirical question
Meta Analyses
Allow you to look at moderators across studies.
Theory Testing Mode
Focused on testing the theory.
What validity does theory testing mode use?
Internal validity
Generalization mode
Focused on applying to real world settings
