(10 cards)
Define ethnicity
A group of people who share a common cultural heritage, including shared values, beliefs, language, traditions, and sometimes, ancestry.
Give 3 examples of ethnicities in the UK
irish, jewish, pakistani
How do we get different ethnicities in the UK?
Immigrants settle in cities (especially east london) and where there were concentrations of an ethic group, the English language absorbed influences from the arrivals
Give 2 limitations of the word ethnicity
-‘ethic’ has now come to mean ‘not white’ for example ethnic foods suggest curry but not fish and chips, the term should refer to everyone as we all have ethnicity
-the term was intended to replace ‘race’ which has negative connotations about racial superiority
-sounds ‘superior’ to some and not to others
define an ethnolect
language associated with a particular ethnic group
What did Becker say as an example of an etholect?
What did she say that could argue against ethnolects?
-African American English is associated with black English people but
-Not all African Americans use AAE and not all AAE speakers are from African-America
Give a limitation of the term ethnolect
it can create divide between “ethnolect” and a “standard” language, implying that ethnic minority speech is less legitimate and prestige
define multiethnolect
language that is influenced from a variety of diff languages
-typically formed in youth communities in working-class neighborhoods
Where did Cheshire say multiethnolects exist?
-Multiethnolects exist in modern urban contexts, especially in Europe where groups of immigrants from different places lived close together
What did devyani Sharma look at?
listened to punjabi speaking Indians in west London
-analysed recordings and listened for features which have a British or Indian variant
-the frequency of variants depended on who takes part in convo
-Indian variants occurred when speaker was expressing personal things
