Reproduction Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction
- The fusion of male and female gametes.
- Offspring contain a mixture of their parents genes
- Happens by meiosis
there is genetic variation
What is asexual reproduction
A type of reproduction that involves mitosis only and produces genetically identical offspring known as daughter cells
Advantages of sexual reproduction
- There is variation
- Variation increases the chance of a species surviving a change in environment
*Natural selection can be sped up by humans in selective breeding to increase food production
Advantages of asexual reproduction(3)
- Only one parent
- Uses less energy than sexual reproduction
- Faster than sexual
What are gametes
Sex cells
Haploid-half the number of chromosomes
What is Meiosis
The cell division involved in the formation of gametes
Involves two divisions
What is interphase
Copies of genetic information are made during this process
What happens during the first stage of Meiosis
•Chromosome pairs line up along the equator of the cell
•The pair of chromosomes are separated and move to opposite sides of the cell
•Chromosome number is halved
What happens during the second stage of Meiosis
Chromosomes line up along the equator
Chromatids are separated and move to opposite sides
Four unique haploid gametes are produced
What are the disadvantages of sexual reproduction
Two parents are required
More time and energy required so fewer offspring produced
what is the disadvantage to asexual reproduction
No genetic variation- reduces the probability of a species being able to adapt to environmental change
