Reproduction in plants Flashcards
1
Q
Describe cross-pollination
A
The transfer of pollen grains from the anther of a flower to the stigma of a flower on a different plant of the same species.
2
Q
Describe self-pollination
A
The transfer of pollen grains from the anther of a flower to the stigma of the same flower, or to a different flower on the same plant.
3
Q
Describe the fertilisation of a plant.
A
- After pollination, a pollen tube grows down the style to the ovary.
- Two male gametes move through the pollen tube (sperm).
- when the pollen tube reaches the ovule, the nucleases of the two gametes fuse with the egg cell nucleus thus forming a zygote.
- The zygote later becomes a plant.
4
Q
Describe germination.
A
The process in which a seed splits and grows into a mature plant.
