the nervous system Flashcards
Describe the sensory neurone
- Relays messages along sensory neurone.
- Stimulus is detected by receptor cell which then sends the message to the central nervous system.
Define relay neurone
Carry messages to one part of the central nervous system to another.
Describe motor neurone.
Send messages from central nervous system via motor neurones to generate a response.
What do the dendrites do?
Receives signals from receptor cells.
What does the cell body do?
Contains the nucleus which controls the function of the cell.
What does the axon do?
Transmits nerve impulses away from cell body.
Describe a synapse.
- Within the axon terminals there are vesicles.
- The vesicles contain neurotransmitters.
- The neurotransmitters travel across the gap and binds with the dendrite of the other neurone.
What is a reflex arc?
The pathway through the body that brings about a reflex action.
How does a reflex arc work?
receptor → sensory neurone → relay neurone → motor neurone → effector
