reproduction in plants Flashcards
flashcards (14 cards)
what are the two types of reproduction?
sexual and asexual reproduction
what are gametes?
gametes are the reproductive cells produced in sex organs
what contains in the gametes?
they contain half the number of chromosomes of normal body cells
the number of chromosomes in a normal body cell is called
the diploid (2n) number
half the diploid is called
the haploid (n) number
what is zygote?
zygote is formed by the female gametes and male gametes
what is sexual reproduction?
sexual reproduction is a process of two gametes to from a zygote
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is a process where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells (cell division)
what is meiosis?
Meiosis is a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in the parent cell by half and produces four gamete cells
what is asexual reproduction?
asexual reproduction is the process of producing genetically identical offspring from one parent, without the fusion of gametes.
what is vegetative reproduction?
vegetative reproduction is a type of asexual reproduction in which new plants grow from the parts of the parents plant, such as root, stems and leaves also bud
examples of vegetative reproduction
rose, hibiscus and potatoes
asexual reproduction produces
genetically identical offspring. and does not invloves the fusion of gametes
does sexual reproduction involves the fusion of gametes?
yes
