Reproduction System Flashcards
(47 cards)
What are gonads?
Primary sex organs
Define accessory organs
Secondary sex organs
(Eggs, pubic hair, etc.)
Define primary sex characteristics
Directly related to gamete production
Define secondary sex characteristics
External + behavioural characteristics
During ejaculation, what structures contract rhythmically?
Vas D, Seminal vesicles, ejaculatory duct, and prostate gland
What controls ejaculation?
Sympathetic nerve stimulation (reflex)
What does ejaculation do?
Forces semen into urethra and out penis
SEVENUP acronym for ejaculation process.
Seminiferous tubules, Epididymus, ejaculatory duct, urethra, penis
What does seminal vesicles do?
Secrete mucus with fructose (nutrients for sperm) and prostaglandins
What does prostaglandins do?
Trigger contraction of female reproductive tract
What does the prostate gland do?
Secrete alkaline buffer to neutralize acidity (urethra + female reproductive system)
What does the Cowper’s/Bulbourethral gland do?
Secrete more mucus
2 parts of the testes?
- Seminiferous tubules - spermatogenesis
- Interstitial cells (Leydig) - testosterone
What dilates the arterioles during arousal?
Parasympathetic nervous system
What does Inhibin do?
Inhibits FSH and GnRH
- from Sertoli cells
What does GnRH do? (Gonads)
Stimulate secretion of LH and FSH
- from hypothalamus
What does LH do? (Male)
Production testosterone in interstitial
- Anterior Pituitary
What does FSH do? (Male)
Production of sperm cells ( in seminiferous)
- Anterior pituitary
What is located in the acrosome? (Cap if sperm)
Digestive enzymes to break down egg walls
What do Sertoli cells do?
Give nutrients + protect from bacteria (WBC)
What is in the middle section of the sperm?
Mitochondria
Define androgen
All male sex hormones
What does testosterone do?
Stimulate spermatogenesis
What gene does the Y chromosome carry?
SRY
