Reproductive System Flashcards
(12 cards)
Reproductive System
Primary function is to secrete hormones that enable us to reproduce
Ovaries
Female gonads; produce hormones estrogen and progesterone
Fallopian tube
Connects ovary to uterus, where an unfertilized egg is released and possibly joins with a male sperm
Ovary
Where unfertilized eggs are stored
Uterus
Facilitates the growth of an embryo (then fetus) during a pregnancy
Vagina
Birth canal, route of entry for male sperm
Ovulation
Release of female egg
Menstruation
Expulsion of uterine lining when an egg is not fertilized and conception doesn’t occur; menses or period
Breasts
Part of reproductive system; mammary glands produce milk after childbirth as a result of hormone release
Testes, testicles
Male gonads; housed within scrotum. Produce testosterone and sperm.
Ejaculation
Sperm and seminal fluid travel through the vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostrate, and urethra via the penis to exit the body
Intercourse
Sperm and seminal fluid is released into the female vagina (during heterosexual intercourse)
