What is puberty?
The time when males and females become physically able to reproduce
What is adolescence?
The transition period of time between childhood and adulthood
The chemicals that cause changes in our bodies are called what?
Hormones
What does having a wet dream signify for a boy?
They can start reproducing. The production of semen has started.
What does starting to menstruate signify for a girl?
Eggs are starting to be produced.
What is an ectopic pregnancy?
When a fetus is developed outside of the womb
What is a hysterectomy?
The surgical removal of a uterus
What is endometriosis?
When the uterus is formed outside.
What is an oophorectomy?
The regal of an ovary (or both).
What is an oogania?
A female gamete
Woman are born with a set number of what?
Gametes
What are the testis mostly composed of?
Seminiferous tubules
What are the three cells of the testis?
Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, smooth muscle
What do the leydig cells do?
Secrete testosterone
What do the Sertoli cells do?
Support sperm development
What do the smooth muscles of the testis do?
Peristalsis: propelling sperm through the seminiferous tubules
What does the epididymis do?
This is where sperm is stored for maturation (maturity). It also transports the sperm to the vas deferens.
What does the scrotum do?
It is a muscular sac which regulates temperature so the sperm can survive.
What do the seminal vesicles do?
-Secrete alkaline substances
-neutralize the acid in the female reproductive system
-the prostaglandins produce motility and viability for sperm
Semen is a mixture of what two substances?
Sperm and seminal fluids
What is the most common cancer for men?
Prostate cancer
What does the bulbourethral / Cowper’s gland do?
Secretes pre-ejactulatory fluids to neutralize and lubricate.
What are the two types of vasectomy for men?
-Knot the vas deferens (reversible)
-Cut and seal the vas deferens (not reversible)
What makes sperm in the testis?
Seminiferous tubules
