Gonads
Primary sex organs responsible for producing gametes and sex hormones
Acessory Reproductive Organs
Structures used to transport and nourish gametes prior to fertilization
Seminiferous Tubules
Tightly coiled in each testie. Where sperm is produced
Epididymis
Tightly coiled tube (6m). Where sperm matures in 20 days.
Vas Deferens
Where sperm goes after maturation
Ampulla of vas deferens
Where sperm is stored.
Ejaculation
Occurs after sexual stimulation. Sperm is expelled into ejaculatory duct and out the urethra.
Seminal vesicles
Forms semen. provides sperm with nutrition and mobility through muscular contraction. Clotts the ejaculate.
Prostate gland
Thins semen for easier sperm movement. Provides citric acid for energy.
Cowper’s gland
An alkaline fluid used to neutralize the urethra and to lubricate the penis
Scrotum
Contains testes. Maintains ideal temp. for sperm survival which is 2-3 lower than normal body temp.
Cremaster muscles
Muscles control how near testes are to body based on outside temp
Penis
Structure that delivers sperm into the female repro. sys. Contains shaft, glans penis, and erectile tissue
Erectile Tissue
Spongy internal tissue that fills with blood during sexual excitement, causing an erection.
Spermatogenesis
Process of sperm production. Begins with stem cells called spermatogonia
Spermatogonia
Divide through meiosis to create 4 spermatids with 23 chromosomes
Spermiogenesis
Final process. Spermatids take final shape of mature sperm. Migrate towards lumen of seminiferous tubule
Head
Contains nucleus of sperm. Has acrosome on front portion that has enzymes to break into the egg.
Midpiece
Surrounded by mitochondria, gives sperm the energy to swim.
Tail
Provides movement of the sperm
Follicles
Clusters of cells surrounding egg (ova). Only abt 400 out of 400,000 follicles mature into eggs
