Research in Psychology Flashcards
(13 cards)
Knowledge is acquired through reason
Rationalism
Knowledge should be acquired through observation
Empiricism
describes the actions or operations that will be used to measure or control a variable
Operational definition
Independent variable has not been manipulated by experimenters
Quasi-experiment
Variables other than the independent variable that seem likely to influence the dependent variable in a study
Extraneous variables
Two variables are linked in a way that makes it difficult to sort out their effects; messes up the experiment
Confounding variables
Someone’s overall evalutaion of a person, object, or institution spils over to influence ratings
Halo effect
Nuemrical index of the degree of relationship between two variable; 0 to +1 or 0 to -1, where near 0 indicates no relationship between variables
Correlation coefficient
Combines the statistical results of many studies of the same question, yielding an estimate of the size and consistency of a variable’s effects
Meta-analysis
Tells you the probability that the results were due to chance
Inferential statistics
Allows the researcher to see whether there is a link or association between variable of interest
descriptive/correlational method
When a subject’s behavior is altered by the presence of an observer
Reactivity
Tendency to give socially approved answers to questions about oneself
Social desirability bias
