Research issues Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are extraneous variables?
any variable that effects the dv ,that’s not the iv, if not controlled-e.g participant reactivity
What are confounding variables?
varies systematically with the IV. therefore we can’t tell if any change in DV was due to the IV or the confounding variable
What are demand characteristics?
any cue from the researcher or from the research situation that may be interpreted by participants as revealing the purpose of the investigation-may lead to participants changing behaviour within research situation- please-u effect an screw-u effect
What are investigator effects?
any effect of the investigator’s behaviour (conscious or unconscious) on the research outcome-may lead participants to change their behaviour within research situation
what is randomisation?
the use of chance methods to control for the effects of bias when designing materials and deciding the order of experimental conditions-an attempt to control investigator effects, an alternitive for counter balancing
What is standardisation?
using exactly the same formalised procedures and instructions for all participants in a research study-prevents extraneous variables
How can a research diminish the effects of extraneous/confounding variables?
randomisation
