research methods Flashcards
(6 cards)
explain why the researcher used a contolled observation and a standardised script in this study.
4 marks
CONTROLLED = ensure theres no cofounding or extraneous variables that affect the behaviour of the children
- increasing validity
STANDARDISED = the same greeting was given to the children’s/parents
- clearly see a clear correlation between the 2 sets of children
- high control
limitation of controlled observations
1 mark
reduces ecological validity
give 2 behavioural categories that the observer, why the chosen category is appropriate
4 marks
- the way the child socialises with another child
- child shares toy
- chosen because they are physically observable and easy to keep track of behaviours
time sampling to record the social behaviour of each child during the 5 minute period
4 marks
- record the childs behaviour at set time intervals during the 5 minute period e.g. every 30 seconds
- every 30 seconds the observer ticks any criteria that the child may meet e.g sharing a toy
- behaviours outside the interval are not recorded
one strength and one limitation of using time sampling for this observation
4 marks
- sharing toys, smiling will be missed outside the interval
- won’t be representative
- less likely to miss behaviours as the researcher usually have a short time to focus on recording behaviour
- more accurate
explain how the reliabilty of the controlled observation could be assessed through inter observer reliability
4 marks
- 2 observers agree on a list of behaviours that they both agree on to observe
- they then make independent observations in the same controlled and standardised setting
- their results are compared to determine the level of inter-observer reliability
