Social support
Locus of control
How does social support help resist
Presence of soical support enables an individual to resist pressures to obey and conform
What are key features of social support
Breaks unanimous position of authority
- supporters and dissenters are likely to reduce conformity by breaking unanimity they raise posibility that there re other legitimate ways of thinking and responding
Presence of an ally provides the individual with an independent assessment of reality
Makes them feel more confident in their descion and be able to stand up against majority
What is the social support research evidence
Allen and Levine asch replication study
What are the 3 findings and conditions of allen and Levines study
Pps had no support- 97% conformity to the group
Pp had supporter with normal vision who gave correct answers- 36% conformity to the group
Pps had a supporter with poor vision who wore thick glasses and gave some incorrect answers (different from other confederates)- 64% conformity to the group
Shows that individuals are much more confident in their ability to resist if they have a ally
These people act as role models and gives a way out of the situation
Shows there is another way to behave
what is locus of control
the extent to which individuals believe they can control events affecting them
what is locus of control orientation
belief about whether the outcomes of our actions are consistent with what we want to do or events outside personal control
what are they 2 types of locus of control
external and internal
what is external locus of control
outcomes outside your control determined by fate, hard work and decisions
what is internal locus of control
outcomes within your control determined by hard work fate and decisions
what are some of the reasons people show resistance to social influence through locus of control
- internals are more likely to be active seekers of information that is useful to them. less likely to rely on the opinions of others making less vulnerable to SI
- tend to be more achievement orientated and become leaders
- better able to resist coercion than externals
- more likely to see consequences of behaviour as their own responsibilty so will not blindly obey or conform as they believe they will still be responsible for their actions
