ANTIHISTAMINES: INDICATIONS

A
  • 1st line for allergies (hay fever)
  • Aid relief of Pruritis and Hives to insect bites or drug allergies
  • Adjunct in Anaphylaxis
  • Can be used for Nausea and Vomiting

ANTIHISTAMINES: MOA

A

Antagonist of H1 receptor

  • Histamine is released from storage granules in mast cells as a result of antigen binding to IgE on the cell surface
  • Induces type 1 Hypersensitivity
  • AntiH blocks the effects of excessive Histamine release

ANTIHISTAMINES: ADVERSE EFFECTS

A
  • Sedation ( H1 receptors have a role in wakefulness)

- Second gen AntiH don’t have this effect as they don’t cross the BBB

  • Sedating Anti H should be avoided in Liver Dx patients
