Q

What happens in the body’s cells?

A

Glucose and oxygen react to release energy. Some of this is released as heat and the rest is used in the cells.

16
Q

What do red blood cells contain?

A

Haemoglobin Hb

17
Q

Where does the oxygen go?

A

Diffuses into the blood

18
Q

Where does the oxygen in the blood go?

A

It binds with Hb in the red blood cells

19
Q

Where do the oxygen in the red blood cells go (after binding with Hb)

A

They are transported around the body and then diffuses right back out again into body cells that need to respire e.g muscle.

20
Q

What does the glucose do?

A

It diffuses into the blood plasma from the intestines

21
Q

What type of respiration is anaerobic?

A

Not needing oxygen

22
Q

What is the anaerobic respiration equation?

A

Glucose -> Lactic Acid + (small amount) of energy

23
Q

What is oxygen debt?

A

The amount of oxygen needed to remove the lactic acid (it is toxic). E.g when runners are panting after a long run to get more oxygen to get rid of the pain.

24
Q

equation for oxygen debt

A

Lactic Acid + Oxygen -> Water + Carbon Dioxide

25
What experiment did we do to see the anaerobic respiration effects.
Take a peg and place it between your thumb and index finger. Press it continuously until you can’t anymore. Get a partner to count how many times you press the peg every 30s.
26
The graph for finger marathon experiment.
y axis = number of presses X axis = Time
27
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in plant and yeast cells?
Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy ( small amount )
28
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells called?
Fermentation
29
When does yeast undergo fermentation?
When bread or bear is made.
30
What is the alcohol
Ethanol
31
Where does the alcohol go?
Evaporated when the bread is baked
32
Where dose the carbon dioxide go?
Trapped in the bread and makes it rise and give beer the bubbles
