Q

Why is aerobic respiration the most efficient way to release energy from glucose?

A

Because it produces the most energy and it it the way the body usually respires

Q

Why does the body start anaerobically respiring when exercising sometimes?

A

Because the body can’t get enough oxygen so it respires anaerobically

Q

Describe an experiment to investigate respiration using beans

A
  1. Put some dried beans in water for few days until they start germinating
  2. Boil some beans to be the control variable
  3. Put hydrogen carbonate solution into 2 test tubes
  4. Put boiled beans in one test tube and germinating beans in other on gauzes
  5. Seal test tubes with bung
  6. Leave for an hour
  7. Observe colour of hydrogen carbonate

Q

What is the result of the respiration experiment using beans?

A

The boiled beans- the hydrogen carbonate solution will be orange as the beans can’t respire so no carbon dioxide is produced

Germinating beans- the hydrogen carbonate solution turns
Yellow as the beans are respiring producing carbon dioxide

Q

How do you do an experiment to measure the heat produced in respiration?

A
  1. Boil son beans and put some beans in water for a few days until they start to germinate
  2. Add the boiled beans to a vacuum flask and the germinating beans to a vacuum flask( make sure there is still air so they can respire)
  3. Put thermometer in each flask
  4. Seal top with cotton wool
  5. Record temperature daily for a week

Results- germinating beans respire producing beat unlike control (boiled beans)
