Respiratory Review Flashcards
(23 cards)
Atelectasis
Complete or partial lung collapse
Pneumothorax
Air in the pleural cavity
Hemothorax
Blood in pleural cavity
Examples of issues that can result in atelectasis
Injury (gunshot, stabbing), bleeding wound, spontaneous
What is a barrel chest?
Chest wall recoils outward- happens when the pleural cavity is broken or when the lungs are overcompliant
What is negative pressure
PULLS air in, there is a change in Palv
What is positive pressure
PUSHES air in, change in Patm
Negative or Positive Pressure?
Normal ventilation in humans
Negative

Negative or Positive Pressure?
Rebreathing (into bags)

Negative or Positive Pressure?
Iron Lung

Negative or Positive Pressure?
Mechanical ventilator
Positive
Hyperpnea
An increase in ventilation to meet an increase in metabolic demands (Eg: exercise)
Increase in rate and depth
Hypoventilation
Ventilation is not sufficient for metabolic demands
Produces more CO2 than releasing (respiratory acidosis)
Hyperventilation
Ventilation is excessive for metabolic demands
Produces less CO2 than releasing
Tachypnea
Rapid, shallow breathing
Majority of air moving in dead space, CO2 is still trapped
Apnea
Temporary cessation of breathing
Dyspnea
Air hunger, labored breathing (shortness of breath)
Causes: Asthma, heart failure, pneumonia, anxiety
Hypoxia
Decreased O2 content in tissues
Hypoxemia
Decreased O2 in blood
Hypercapnia
Excess CO2 in blood
Hypocapnia
Deficiency of CO2 in blood
