Hand Steering
Switch to back up pump, if backup not working, engage emergency steering
Manoeuvre ship as appropriate/ Stop engines
Inform engine room of steering failure
take all way off ship if safe to do so

Prepare for anchoring if water depth is available

C-6 Man Over board

A

Release life boat with light and smoke float on on the side the person has fallen over board
assign lookout to point and not loose contact of person
Call Master
Muster crew
Mark Vessels position on GPS MOB
Mark position on ECDIS MOB button
Engage hand steering,
General Alarm and 3 Prolonged blasts on ships whistle
OSCAR
Immediate action to turn towards the side the person has fallen overboard (stern away)
Post lookouts with binos
commence recovery procedure
prepare ships specific procedures for mob recovery from water
Use IAMSAR Volume 3 and BPG to help

C9 SAR and receiving a distress

A

Record contents of the distress alert and which channel it was received on
inform master
Establish communications with OSC and other SAR units
Monitor x band radio as SART may be picked up
Consult IAMSAR manual and industry guidance on rescue procedures
Post additional look outs
Prepare for recovery of persons from the water (ship Specific plan)

C10 - Abandoning Ship

A

Broadcast distress message on authority by master
Abandoning Ship is on call from Master
Muster crew head count Instruct crew to don life jackets and immersion suits as appropriate
Muster crew at lifeboats and life rafts
Prepare LSA for launch
Collect EPIRB, SART & VHF Radios
Collect Vessel Documents, Passports
ensure lifeboats and life rafts are in close proximity to the ship, pass down painter and secure to strong point near boarding station
Sea sickness tablets
once clear of Vessel Cut, Stream, Close Maintain
Activate SART and place as high as possible and no radar reflector up
- EPIRB switch on and drag in water behind you

Raise alarm

First aid
transfer person ashore and try get help
TMAS and Med Air support
Captain and Chief officer have advanced medical care and hopefully take over
Inmarsat SAR 32 for medical advice SAR 38 medical assistance
