Response to injuries Flashcards
SALTAPS
-See
-Ask
-Look
-Touch
-Active movement
-Passive movement
-Strengthen
See (SALTAPS)
-May have seen the injury happen
E.g. a player gets tackled onto his shoulder and is holding his shoulder afterward
Ask (SALTAPS)
-Clarify what happened to cause injury
-Ask questions to get info on level + area of pain
E.g. where is the pain/what happened?
Look (SALTAPS)
-Look at the area of pain
-Compare injured and non-injured limb
E.g. Swelling, bruising
Touch (SALTAPS)
-Touch around injury
-keep an eye on the face for pain
Active movement (SALTAPS)
Assess ROM without help
e.g. asking them to move their fingers as much as they can
Passive movement (SALTAPS)
-Therapist is moving the joint
-Assess ROM
E.g. you moving their fingers
Strength (SALTAPS)
-Assess the strength of the limb
-using isometric muscle movement
PRICE
-Protect
-Rest
-Ice
-Compress
-Elevate
Protect (PRICE)
-protection to prevent further injury
E.g. Using a sling to protect a shoulder injury
Rest (PRICE)
-Important to promote healing
-However genital movement can speed up healing
Ice (PRICE)
-Post-event cooling aids e.g. cold pack
-Minimise swelling + decrease pain
-However, can get ice burns
Compress (PRICE)
Mimimes swelling + support
Elevate (PRICE)
-Controls swelling
-Which helps to decrease pain + promote recovery
The 6 R’s
- Recognise-signs+symptoms of concussion
- Remove-player immediately from the pitch
- Refer- to a qualified professional
- Rest- Until symptom-free
-No alcohol or physical activity - Recover- fully from signs & symptoms
-RFU 1 week for adukts, 3 for U18 - Return-need written permission from qualified professionals before returning to play
Rehabilitaion (treatments)
-Process of restoring full physical function after an injury has occurred
Prevents:
-reinjury
-Not performing at pre-injury standards
-Predisposition to injury in another part of the body
Stretching (treatments)
Restores normal flexibility of the joint
+Increases speed of recovery
+Increases muscle relaxation
+Decreases muscle soreness
+Improves circulation
Acute phase- no stretching during the first 3 days
Mid phase- gentle, slow stretched movements
-Static stretching
-Up to 2 weeks
Later phase- focuses on ROM
-PNF added
Massage (treatments)
-Treat soft tissue injuries
-Reduce tension
-Injury prevention
+Increase ROM
+Breaks down scar tissue
+Reduces muscle pain
E.g. foam rollers, massage gun
Heat Therapy
Injuries it benefits:
-chronic injuries
-Muscle tension
+Improves treatment of soft tissue injuries
+Decrease muscle tension
+Vasodilation of blood vessels increases blood in the injury site
-Increase bleeding & swelling is applied in the first 24 hr of acute injury
E.g. heat packs, warm shower
Cold therapy
Benefits all injuries
+Decrease pain
+vasoconstriction of blood vessels
+Deacrease blood flow+ swelling
-Ice burns
-Nerve damage
E.g. Ice packs, Ice baths
Contrast therapy
Injuries it benefits:
-Stress fractures
-Sprain
+Good after exercise & late stage of injury
+Increase blood flow to injured dite
-Dont use 24hr after injury
-Ice burns
E.g. Ice bath to warm bath
Anti-inflammatory drugs
+NSAIDs block hormones that cause inflammation
+Inhibit the inflammatory response to reduce swelling
-Inhibit natural healing process
-Mask injuries
Short-term uses: rashes, headaches
Long-term uses: increased risk of cardiovascular complications, gastrointestinal bleeding
E.g. ibuprofen
Physiotherapy
Restore movement + function after injury
Helps injury prevention
+Massage, stretch tissue, increase circulation
+Mobilisation of joints & tissue
+Postire & alignment training=relived tension
E.g. acupuncture, ultrasound
Surgery
-Removed damaged tissue
-Reconstruct & realign damaged tissue
