Resting Blood Pressure Flashcards
(21 cards)
Blood pressure measurement is ________ and is recommended to have it checked _______.
one of the most common clinical tests; annually
What is the purpose of taking BP measurement?
The primary clinical purpose of measuring blood pressure is to determine the potential risk of cardiovascular disease. Measuring resting BP also establishes a baseline by which to compare the effect of exercise on BP.
Define primary hypertension
cause of hypertension is unknown
Define secondary hypertension
caused by known endocrine or structural disorders
BP is primarily dependent upon ___
the volume of blood and the resistance of the blood vessels.
Korotkoff sounds
sounds made by the vibrations from the vascular walls
Systolic pressure
Phase 1; highest pressure that exists in the arteries
phase 4
blood becomes more streamlined due to less compressions and there is a reduction of vibrations causing a muffled sound
Diastolic pressure
phase 5; lowest pressure that exists in arteries; blood flow is completely streamlined (laminar flow) and sound disappears.
Task Force and AHA use which phase to interpret children’s norms and persons above 12 yo
phase 4 for children, phase 5 for age 12+
Pulse Pressure (PP)
difference between systolic and diastolic pressure; reflects vascular compliance in large arteries
PP=SBP-DBP(5th)
Mean arterial pressure (MAP)
resting MAP is usually 1/3 the distance between systolic pressure and diastolic pressure
MAP=DBP (5th)+ (PP/3)
List procedural steps in taking BP
- participant should sit comfortably in char for at least 5 min. Bare arm is at health level, resting
- manometer should be clearly visible/at eye level
- Fit appropriate size cuff on participant’s upper arm.
- place bell of stethoscope firmly over the brachial artery in the antecubital space
- turn air release screw clockwise and inflate cuff to 160 mm Hg
- turn air release screw counterclockwise to decrease cuff pressure at 2-3 mm Hg/second
- listen for korotkoff sounds (phase 1, 4,5)
- rapidly deflate cuff
- record values in even numbers
standing position while taking BP ___
increases diastolic pressure but not systolic pressure
What is normal BP
What BP range is considered pre-hypertensive
120-139 mm Hg and 80-89 mm Hg
What BP range is considered hypertensive
> /= 140 mm Hg and >/= 90 mm Hg
Stage 1 hypertension
140-159 mm Hg and 90-99 mm Hg
stage 2 hypertension
> /= 160 mm Hg and >/= 100 mm Hg
A person with this BP range is at risk for stroke
> /= 160 and >/= 95
Ways to reduce blood pressure
reduce body weight, nutrition, reduce sodium intake, engage in exercise and PA, limit alcohol consumption.
