Vacuum tubes used as circuitry and magnetic drums used as memory. -

  • Enormous
  • Used machine language which is the lowest programming language understood by a computer.

Disadvantages:They took up a lot of space.

  • They generated a lot of heat which lead to malfunctions

Vacuum tubes were replaced by transistors.
Transistors allowed computers to be faster and smaller.
The machine language was replaced by assembly languages which allowed programmer to specify instructions in words.

29
Q

3rd gen- year

Xplain

A

1964-1971

IC- integrational circuits were the hallmark of the 3rd gen
Transistors were miniaturized and placed on silicone chips called semi-conductors
For the first time mass audience could own a computer since it was cheaper and smaller.

30
Q

4th gen

Year? Xplain

A
