What is tourism?
tourism is the commerical organization and operation of vacations and visits to places of interest.
Why is tourism important?
It creates jobs, brings income, improves infrastructure, and promotes cultural exchange.
What are economic impacts of tourism?
Job creation, income, and investment in local areas (e.g. Thailand).
What are social impacts of tourism?
Cultural exchange, but also possible cultural erosion (e.g. Venice).
What is sustainable tourism?
Tourism that meets today’s needs without harming future generations or the environment
Why is sustainable tourism important?
It protects nature, supports local people, and keeps tourism going long-term.
Give 3 ways to make tourism more sustainable.
Eco-friendly practices, support locals, protect wildlife.
Name 3 factors that caused tourism to grow.
Better transport, internet/social media, rising incomes.
What are positives of tourism?
Jobs, money, cultural exchange, infrastructure, conservation.
What are negatives of tourism?
Pollution, culture loss, overcrowding, economic dependence.
Example of sustainable tourism country?
Costa Rica (eco-tourism), Bhutan (GNH), Galapagos Islands (visitor limits).
What is a settlement?
A place where people live and form a community.
What is settlement hierarchy?
The order of settlements by size and importance (hamlet → village → town → city → megacity).
Define settlement functions.
Roles in a settlement: residential, commercial, industrial, administrative.
What is a settlement site?
The actual physical location (e.g. near water, flat land).
What is a settlement situation?
Where a place is in relation to other things (e.g. near trade routes).
What is a nucleated settlement?
Buildings clustered together (e.g. a village around a green).
What is a dispersed settlement?
Buildings spread far apart (e.g. farms in countryside).
What is a linear settlement?
Buildings in a line (e.g. along roads or rivers).
How can settlements be more sustainable?
Use renewable energy, recycle, green transport, eco-buildings.
What is urban growth?
Increase in size of towns and cities, usually due to migration.
What are push factors in migration?
Reasons to leave rural areas: lack of jobs, poor services.
What are pull factors in migration?
Reasons to move to cities: better jobs, services, lifestyle.
How do settlements change over time?
Growth from small to large due to population, jobs, and infrastructure (e.g. Hong Kong, London).
