A settlement where buildings are clustered together.

A settlement where buildings are spread out.
What is a linear settlement?
A settlement that is arranged in a line, often along a road or a river.

Mega city, city, town, village, hamlet, isolated dwelling.
What makes a good location for a settlement?
Access to water, land quality, defense, positioning of the shelter, natural resources, attractiveness, function.
What are examples of the functions of a settlement?
Residential (housing), commercial (shops and businesses), industrial (factories), and administrative (government offices.)
What are types of changes in settlements?
Social changes, economic changes,
Political changes, environmental changes, cultural changes.
What is urban growth?
The development and growth of towns and cities.
What is a push factor?
Reasons why people move away from a place.
What is a pull factor?
Reasons why people choose to move to a particular place.
What services do urban areas usually provide?
Healthcare, transportation, social and cultural facilities, waste management, housing, economic opportunities and emergency services.
What factors influence the site of a settlement?
Characteristics such as water supply, soil fertility and climate.
What factors influence the situation of a settlement?
These include the settlement’s location relative to other places such as trade routes or neighboring cities.
What is a rural area?
A countryside location with low population density and limited infrastructure.

Peace and quiet; cleaner air.
Name 2 disadvantages in rural areas
Poor access to services; transport difficulties.
What does “community spirit” mean in rural areas?
Strong social ties where people often known and support eachother
